A spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey confirmed this afternoon that the Marietta Republican walked out of President Barack Obama’s address at the annual National Prayer Breakfast, offended by what the congressman said was an injection of political rhetoric into an occasion of non-partisan reflection.
Phil Gingrey walks out on Barack Obama’s prayer address (via ryking)
First of all, Gingrey has no problem when his party politicizes religion (which is an hourly and nationwide occurrence), so he’s a hypocrite. Second, Obama wasn’t politicizing religion. Third, this breakfast is highly inappropriate, sending a message that non-Christians are second-class citizens.
I agree with all three points.
Dear God, thank You for all creation.
In the spirit of Jesus of Nazareth and all teachers of peace who inspire the many faith traditions,
help me, and all the people of the world,
learn how to replace hate, war, oppression and division
with love, peace, freedom and reconciliation.
Help me to embody Your love in my relationships
with my family and friends, strangers – and even my enemies.
I commit myself to this sacred task throughout my life.So let it be.
Apparently, this prayer turned out to be the most controversial part of the 2011 National Prayer Breakfast (if one excludes (a) the fact that there is a National Prayer Breakfast, and (b) the fact that ethics groups petitioned Obama to boycott the Washington event).
I’m wondering… why? ‘Cause Undercover Nun happens to think it’s a wonderful prayer, and plans to print it out, stick it in my BCP, and use it often.
Is it because the two men who developed this prayer are conservative millionaires?
Is it because the prayer appears to equate Jesus with all teachers of peace who inspire the many faith traditions?
Is it because we rather like being able to be violent, warlike, oppressing, and divisive, in clear contrast to the teachings of the bible?
What do you think? Does this prayer bother you?
