I do not think there are many among Bishops that will be saved, but many more that perish.

St. John Chrysostom

Well then.

(via invisibleforeigner)

Wrong. We can’t disagree with or criticize bishops in any way.

Wait…. he was a bishop?!

(via shortbreadsh)

Yeah, I’m not prepared to do any formal statistical analysis, but I bet there are more saints that criticized bishops than who were bishops. Just sayin’.

If God’s kingdom is as topsy-turvy-upside-down-y as Jesus says in the gospels, then a whole lot of us — including bishops, priests, deacons, and religious — are in deep trouble.

College for Beards Bishops, including the Ordinary of my beloved diocese!
At least, that’s what those who share the picture, say.  Undercover Nun can’t find a single bishop in the bunch: not one purple shirt among them, much less a pointy hat!

Note: I did not find a credit for this picture, so I will assume that the copyright belongs to the Episcopal Church’s College for Bishops, if not to Bp. Holly himself.

Of Course, I Could Be Wrong...

MADPRIEST’S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Each diocese should have three bishops - a diocesan and two suffragans.

One suffragan should be the priests’ bishop and the other the laity’s bishop. The diocesan bishop should keep out of politics and employment stuff and just be all holy and that sort of thing.

That’s a radical idea… but quite workable!  In The Episcopal Church (in the US), our dioceses are so big that our diocesan bishop has no time to be the chief pastor.  Or he’s a great chief pastor and has no time for his other episcopal duties.  As a result, the clergy in the diocese don’t have a pastor; the laity of the diocese don’t have a place to go; and the forward-looking vision (and other CEO-like stuff) get short shrift.  Everybody loses.

MadPriest is onto something here.

Even in matrimonial matters, [Saint Augustine] felt the need of making proselytes. So he fell upon the worthy Alypius. He, to be sure, guarded himself chastely from women, although in the outset of his youth, to be like everybody else, he had tried pleasure with women; but he had found that it did not suit his taste.

(emphasis mine)

Louis Bertrand (1866-1941), in his biography titled Saint Augustin.

Now Alypius, in addition to being Augustine’s best friend, was also consecrated a bishop and is a saint in his own right.  And I have to wonder here: was St. Alypius the first recorded homosexual bishop?  And possibly the first homosexual saint?

I nominate St. Alypius as the patron saint of gay and lesbian persons, with his feast day being August 15.  Is there a second?

President of Uganda tells African bishops: "There should be no room for intolerance because everyone is made in the image of God."

Uganda’s President Museveni said today that tolerance was a biblical imperative and that Christians should not “have one minute of time wasted” by those promoting prejudice.

Speaking to almost 400 bishops and other guests at the All Africa Bishops Conference in Entebbe this morning, President Museveni used the Biblical parable of the Good Samaritan to highlight the need to overcome difference and pursue peace and healing.

Drawing on Ugandan religious history, President Museveni explained it took only ten years after the first convert to Christianity in Uganda before Catholics and Protestants were fighting and killing each other.

“I don’t’ know where they heard God wanted them to fight and kill each other,” he said. “A civil war between those calling themselves Catholics and those calling themselves Protestants! Then there was another war between the two of them and Muslims. They were all fighting on behalf of God, they said.” …

You GO, President Museveni!  Undercover Nun holds your good work in her prayers.

And to those at the All Africa Bishops Conference who are filled with fear, with anger, with hate, with desire for schism: Undercover Nun prays for your immortal souls.
